With the sun finally making an appearance this evening, James Baker invited us to dive headlong into 6 white wines. First on taste was the Boreham Wood Sauvignon Blanc 2011 from New Zealand. For £9.99 a ‘full on’ New World Sauvignon with lashings of Gooseberry and Blackcurrant, striking acidity and a great length. A perfect start for the evening and expertly paired with some tasty Goats Cheese.
Next up was a personal favourite, the Montagny 1er Cru 2010 from Michel Andreotti.
This unoaked Chardonnay was elegant and chic with citrus notes, Peach and Apricot on the nose and a fine minerality
At £13.99 somewhat of a star for this summer. NB for a limited time, we are discounting this by 20%, down to just £11.19 a bottle!
The Domaine Moulinier Viognier from 2010 followed on next, a full bodied almost oily white with a wonderful nose of ripe Peach, Honey and a hint of Ginger.
A perfect partner for Roasted Pork Belly. A wonderful food-friendly wine to partner weightier dishes – £9.99
What follwed next was a (pleasant) surprise to most.
The Chateau Musar Jeune Blanc 2010, a blend of Chardonnay, Vermentino and Viognier from the Bekaa valley in Lebanon was a real head turner. Completely unoaked with a dry but honeyed palate with hints of Violet and stone fruit, and a touch of Basil on the finish. A must for any picnic this summer! We paired this with Mozzarella wrapped in Basil and it was fantastic!
A winner at £9.50
Hopping over to South America, Argentina to be precise, we tasted the Torrontes Mendoza Andeluna 2011. Bursting with ripeness, this turned out to be the star of the night. A cascade of Melon, Pear and Pineapple mingle superbly with refreshing acidity and a finish that goes on for ever. A star is born – £11.40
To finish we went with a big hitter. Domaine Bourdon Pouilly Fuisse ‘Tradition’ 2010.
The Chardonnay grape from its spiritual home, Burgundy. Lashings of butter and cream from the Oak overlaid with tropical fruit and a hint of Banana. At £16.75 a wine with real elegance and class, and a perfect end to a great evening.
