Italian Wine Tasting – La Dolce Vita – March 1st

With so much to choose from (Italy produces more wine than any other country), James had his work cut out to pick a selection that was interesting, varied, great tasting and good value:
1. Prosecco Spumante DOCG Conegliano E Valdobbiadene Ca´ Morlin

Prosecco Spumante DOCG Conegliano E Valdobbiadene Ca´ Morlin

The evening’s proceedings started with the sparkle of this finely-made Prosecco.  Very elegant, with a fine mousse, drier than many expect from Italian sparkling wine, lovely grapey aromas.  An ideal aperitif.

£14.25 per bottle

2. 2011 Greco di Tufo DOCG Vesevo Campania

Pale gold in appearance.
Attractive grassy nose with green fruit notes, this is a well built wine, great balance, long and sleek on the finish. This is not a flamboyant wine, the minerality of the volcanic soil is evident.  Great with fish dishes and green olives

£13.00 per bottle

2011 Ca Dei Frati I Frati Lugana

3. 2011 Ca Dei Frati I Frati LuganaThe final white wine was as attractive as its bottle promised.
Floral, honeyed notes on the nose; citrus freshness on the palate with a touch of apricot.  A great balance of acidity and smoothness.  Deservedly gaining high scores from the critics – and ourselves!
One of our favourites,  £15.25 per bottle

2010 Chianti DOCG Tenuta Brunelli

 4.2010 Chianti DOCG Tenuta Brunelli

The first Red of the evening was this hard-to-find Chianti.  It’s produced by the Brunelli family who own a small estate near Montalcino.
Their carefully made wine produces red fruits with good acidiy and balanced with a smoothness and length that belies its cost.

We import this directly so can offer this at the fantastic price of £9.40 per bottle

2010 Valpolicella ´Ripasso´ Cortegiara

 5. 2010 Valpolicella ´Ripasso´ Cortegiara
Good depth of ruby colour with a more aromatic nose than previous vintages. The intense, dried cherry perfume is spicy and lifted by a cinnamon and nutmeg note. On the palate, it is structured and savoury, with lovely textured tannins, plenty of concentrated cherry and plum fruit and the characteristic bitter cherry twist of top wines from this region

2010 Beneventano Aglianico Vesevo Campania

6. 2010 Beneventano Aglianico Vesevo Campania
Our final wine of the evening erupted like the volcano after which it was named:

Deep, dark crimson in colour with a powerful perfume of chocolate, mocha and ripe black cherries. Rich, intense and savoury on the palate, with good balance between solid, chunky fruit characters, ripe, supple tannins and a long, smoky, chocolate finish.

One to enjoy with red meat or full-flavoured cheese.

£11.10 per bottle.
